Proper tea storing

On In Tea Stories

Many people may think that the taste of tea is determined by the type of tea itself, and yes, this does matter. But an important aspect is how you store your tea. The actual process of keeping your tea fresh and tasty is defined by how you store it – temperature conditions, containers, humidity levels, and so on. In some ways, storing your tea could be just as important as choosing the right tea in the first place.

If you love tea as much as I do, you’re probably wondering how to store it in a way that will retain its delicious taste. Tea leaves are often sensitive to light and moisture, so proper storage is important to keep them fresh for longer. Here are some tips to store your favorite teas in an efficient and convenient way.

TEA STORAGE AND BEST BEFORE DATE

Proper storage of tea is the key to prolong shelf life and preserve the quality of opened packages of tea. Unopened, packed tea can last over a year after its best before date.

Unopened tea can be stored in a cupboard that has no intense odours (spices etc) to prolong self life. When stored properly, packed tea has an additional 6-12 months of shelf life.

STORAGE ADVISE

Keep leaves away from sunlight

Tea with loose leaves is best kept in a stainless steel container, as it easily blocks sunlight. Many loose-leaf teas are actually sold in stainless steel containers, so if your tea came in one, keep storing it in it. Make sure the container you select is sealed. It is very important to seal it correctly, everytime.

Use a glass container.

If you don’t have a stainless steel container, a glass container can act as a substitute. However, make sure that the glass container is not exposed to light. This will prevent your tea being exposed to sun light. Also make sure that it has an airtight lid.

Tea can also remain in a bag.

If you bought your tea in a bag and don’t have handy storage containers, it’s okay to leave your tea in the bag. It can be preserved in the bag until its expiry date.

Use airtight containers whenever possible

After placing your tea in your chosen container, be sure to seal the container. Keep the lid as tight as possible. The less exposure your tea has to outside air, the better!

Store tea at room temperature

Tea with loose leaves should be kept in a room that has a constant room temperature. Temperature fluctuations can damage loose-leaved tea, so store it in a room where the temperature remains relatively constant. Avoid storing tea with loose leaves near heaters, air conditioners or a window.

Store tea in a dark cupboard

Tea with loose leaves should not be exposed to a lot of light, especially not to direct sunlight. Store your tea in a place that is not exposed to light. For example, you can store your tea in the back corner of a kitchen cupboard. If you store your tea in a kitchen cupboard, make sure it’s a cupboard away from heat sources such as ovens and toasters. Also avoid cupboards with spices and intense odours.

Keep away from moisture

Moisture can negatively affect tea. Keep your tea away from water that can cause moisture. Tea should be stored away from refrigerators, areas where you boiled water and any other place in your home near water sources.

Keep away from strong odours

Many people store their tea along with their spices. This is generally not a good idea. Tea can actually absorb aromas very easily. Storing your tea near spices can affect its taste.

Do not store in plastic containers

Never store your tea in plastic. Plastic absorbs odours and is generally clear, leaving your tea vulnerable to light sources.

Never store tea in your refrigerator.

The refrigerator won’t help the tea last longer, and moisture can damage your tea. Remember, tea is best preserved when stored at room temperature
